Yet another long fun-filled day with Pegs! We woke up early so we could be the first ones at the Farmers Market, and we pretty much were… When we got down there, not even all the farmers had set up their stands. We did about three loops around the market in search of her favorite Amish farmer (who unfortunately was no where to be found) before settling on gorgeous broccoli and carrots from the sweetest banjo-playing farmer, raw snacks from Kathy’s neighbor and good friend June, and other beautifully fresh picked produce for the coming week. Funny that it didn’t even surprise me that we spent a good hour and a half there even though there are really only 4 or 5 farmers.
After we collected our goods, we rushed down the street to the D-hole just in time to catch the tail end of the Duck Race. For those of you who are unfamiliar with Steamboat, the D-hole is one of the more difficult rapids on the Yampa in downtown and also where the race ended.
Early this week when we were shopping at City Market I saw this lady selling Rubber Ducks at a table right when we walked into the store. I was curious as to what these cute rubber things with sunglasses and beanies were for and she said it was to help raise money for the local hospital. Since Pegs had a “great” experience (or as good as one could be in a hospital) there, we decided it would be a fun and worthwhile cause to support, so bought two ducks for the race!
In the end, our timing was actually perfect because by the time we had gotten there thousands of bright yellow rubber duckies were floating down the river. There were families with little kids everywhere picking up the ducks and then throwing them back into the river. Pegs and I loved watching the kids have so much fun!
We took a couple dozen photos, before heading home to get ready for our hike with Kathy.
Since it was such a beautiful day, we decided it would be the best day for a long hike… however, we didn’t realize just how long of a hike we were getting ourselves into. We initially thought since Robin had done the hike not that long ago with her 84-year-old mom that it wouldn’t be so difficult. However, 4 hours later Kathy and Pegs could barely make it as they staggered back to the car. On that hike from Mad Creek to Strawberry Park Hot Springs, we saw 4 snakes, 5 mountain bikers, and a beautifully morbid elk carcass!
Too exhausted to bake anything extravagant, Pegs and I settled on making a pizza for dinner. After we ate (and since the Hot Springs downtown close at 8pm on the weekends… which I find absurd—it’s the freaking weekend!) we went over to Kathy’s to soak in her hot tub. By that time we were all sore and feeling the long days hike. But overall, it was a beautiful hike on an even more beautiful day!
