Learning Something New Everyday

Day 3 on Hill Street:

Today Pegs let me sleep in a bit, and when I finally got out of bed we did a yoga set right here in our living room looking out at the garden… It was a very relaxing way to wake up! We were slightly pressed for time, so for breakfast we had some granola before mom’s dear friend Robin came over to hike Spring Creek with us. When we got to the pond midway, I decided to run an extra mile up the trail towards Buff Pass. It was such a beautiful scene running along the creek through the Aspen trees, but I decided to turn around before the rain clouds rolled in and ended catching up to them right before our house.

After our hike, we finally started mapping out the cookbook! We decided how we were going to edit mom's introduction and just needed the supplies to do so. Feeling somewhat accomplished, we decided to go out and look for the last few pieces of furniture the house needed while picking up ink and paper for the printer. While at Annie's, the local consignment store where Peg's got all the furniture for our house, we found some great end tables—one in particular that was perfect for our printing station. Before purchasing anything though, we decided to go by Annie's second store on the way home just to see what else they had. As we pulled into the parking lot, the first thing I saw were the most vibrant green Adirondack chairs we just had to get; they were such a steal!

After purchasing the two chairs, we headed home to get back to work... However, when we got home we both got distracted and by the time we “came to” it was time to start dinner.

Peg’s friend’s sister, Linda, originally created tonight’s meal of stir-fry veggies with sweet potato. We began by sticking the sweet potatoes in the oven to cook for an hour before chopping the collard greens, carrots & broccoli. Pegs then taught me the proper way to blanch veggies: All you need to do is drop the veggies into boiling water for 3 minutes to cook them, which really brings out their color (as you can see)!

I was then put on salad duty and began by cutting up the lettuce. When I finished, I asked Pegs which bowl to make the salad dressing in and learned yet another new thing! The idiom she responded with "six of one, (half a dozen of the other)" meaning "Either way/ it doesn't really matter" apparently was something my Poppy (mom’s dad) used to say. When she first said it, I thought I miss-heard her and that gave us a good laugh. I truly enjoy learning phrases you don't hear anymore :)
